Lawson’s Finest started in 2008 (with a one barrel brewery!) by owners Sean & Karen Lawson. In 2011 they increased the brewery capacity to a seven barrel system. It was truly a “Mom & Pop” operation until 2016 when TJ Greenwood was hired as the first employee. Find more background information here!

It is now time for Lawson’s Finest to welcome two more staff to our team! Job openings include an Office Administrator and a Brand Ambassador. Please click the link below for application information.

Starting June 15, you will find draft and bottles of Bit o’ Balsam American IPA (6.5% abv), a brand new beer featuring wild crafted Balsam Fir tips harvested at high elevations in the Green Mountains, with citrus & piney hops including Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe. Lawson’s Finest will donate a portion of all proceeds from Bit o’ Balsam IPA to Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) to benefit research and conservation efforts of the endangered Bicknell’s Thrushone of the region’s highest conservation priority migratory songbirds. Bottles will be available 6/15 at Warren Store and Hunger Mountain Co-op, 6/16 at Beverage Warehouse and 6/20 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

Starting June 22, the latest batch of Space in Between will be released in bottles and draft in Vermont. Bottles will be available 6/22 at Warren Store and Hunger Mountain Co-op, 6/23 at Beverage Warehouse and 6/27 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

During this month, you’ll find fresh batches of Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 (cans and draft) around the states of Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

June 10th is the Sugarbush Brew Grass festival where we will pour Super Session #2, Kiwi Double IPA, Double Sunshine IPA, and Rico Poivre Rye Peppercorn Saison. Look for us at a swanky new tent set up courtesy of our friends at Umbrella Bars USA!

On June 17th join Brewer and Naturalist Sean Lawson as well as Vermont Center for Ecostudies (VCE) biologists from 10:30am – 2:30pm at Mad River Glen (MRG) for a hike to the summit of Stark Mountain in search of the elusive Bicknell’s Thrush and to learn about songbirds that inhabit both the northern hardwood and high elevation spruce-fir forests of Stark Mountain. Wear waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear, and bring protection against the possibility of black flies. The hike will be cancelled in the case of steady rain.

Also on June 17th from 3-6pm MRG will host a fundraiser for VCE with a full pub menu (including prime rib starting at 4:30!), quenching drinks and rocking music by Peace in the Valley. Suggested donation of $10 goes directly to the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. Lawson’s Finest will debut a new draft beer, Bit o’ Balmsam IPA, and a portion of all the beer proceeds will be donated to VCE to benefit research and conservation efforts of the endangered Bicknell’s Thrush (one of the region’s highest conservation priority migratory songbirds). Sean Lawson has been a steadfast volunteer for the Mountain Birdwatch program where he conducts an annual bird survey at dawn high in the peaks of the Green Mountains. Sean has been fortunate enough to witness the Bicknell Thrush’s unique & beautiful song for nearly 15 years!

It’s race day June 29th! At 7pm Thunder Road in Barre will host the “Brewers Cup” featuring many local Vermont brewers including Sean Lawson! Come cheer on the brewers as they race around the track to the finish line!

The recent batch of our award winning Maple Tripple will be bottled the end of this month. Stay tuned for details on our anticipated late summer release!

May Beer News

First, a thank you. Our 9th anniversary benefit event on 4/8/17 was such a great celebration, and full of gratitude as well. Karen and Sean Lawson were pleased to donate $8,000 to Lily Stilwell to help retrofit her home for accessibility, and $3,000 to the Mad River Path Association to enhance pedestrian connectivity through Irasville and to extend the boardwalk located off Carroll Road towards the Mad River Green. Lawson’s Finest appreciates all of your continued support over the years, and looks ahead to our bright future!

The week of May 1st we are thrilled to distribute a very special Western beer to Vermont! Lawson’s Finest has a refrigerated shipment coming from Yakima WA with a fresh load of hops, and we decided to make a detour and pick up cases of Melvin…a tasty IPA from our friends at Melvin Brewing in Jackson Hole Wyoming. They are two time Alpha King Champions and also have World Beer Cup & GABF bling to prove it, so grab some while you can as it won’t last long. You will find limited quantities on 5/2 at Village Grocery, Mehuron’s, Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury, 5/4 Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, 5/5 Beverage Warehouse and 5/8 Woodstock Hops and Barley. Check out our Find Our Beer page for location information.

Starting May 5th, we bring back an all-time fan favorite beer – Double Sunshine IPA (bottles and draft). It’ll be available in bottles 5/5 at Beverage Warehouse, 5/9 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury, and 5/11 at Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op.

The week of May 22nd will feature a new collaboration beer with our friends at Whetstone Station in Brattleboro VT. Rico Poivre Rye & Peppercorn Saison (bottles and draft) will debut at the special beer dinner hosted by Whetstone Station on May 17th. It’ll be available in bottles 5/25 at Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, 5/26 at Beverage Warehouse, and 5/30 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

This month Sean will be brewing a batch of Maple Tripple, our award winning beer brewed only once per year in the spring with 100% concentrated maple sap. Sean will then blend this batch with last years batch (which aged for a full year) before bottling which lends a rich, complex and distinctly Vermont character to the beer. Possible bottle release this summer – follow the monthly beer news for updates!

During this month, you’ll find Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 (cans and draft) around the states of Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Sip of Sunshine IPA – The first packaging run in May features the same quality hops we always use to brew our Sip of Sunshine IPA, however, this batch incorporates a new lot from a different hop farmer. Different lots can have distinct differences in flavor and aroma profile. We are working with our entire hops supply from the 2016 fall harvest to perfect just the right blend of different lots of hops to deliver the most tropical fruit-forward and lupulin-laden experience you expect in every can of Sip!

May 10 & 11 Lawson’s Finest will make appearances in Massachusetts as a way to thank you for your support! On  5/10 from 9-11pm we’ll be at City Tap House in Boston for a “Fireside Chat with Sean Lawson”. On Thursday 5/11 you can “Meet the Brewer” at Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge from 4:30-6:30. From 8-10pm you can “Meet the Brewer” at The Publick House in Brookline.

May 13th Lawson’s Finest is happy to quench your thirst at the Rising Pint beer festival in East Hartford Connecticut!

May 15-21 is Green Mountain Beer Week and Lawson’s Finest is proud to take part! May 17th is a night all about great food, friends and beer! Tickets are available for Tap That 9 Beer Dinner held at Whetstone Station in Brattleboro which will debut our collaboration beer Rico Poivre Rye and Peppercorn Saison. On May 19th join Lawson’s Finest at Kingdom Brewing for a night Honoring the Tradition of Sap Beer.

Summer is right around the corner which means many great Vermont beer events to enjoy! Tickets are on sale now for Sugarbush Brew Grass on June 10; Vermont Brewers Festival on July 21 & 22; and Hop Jam August 19th.

April Beer News

We are thrilled to inform you that the Waitsfield Development Review Board has granted our local permits for the new brewery and taproom on Carroll Road. The picture associated with this post is our vision for the new Lawson’s Finest Taproom!

Lawson’s Finest honors nine years of brewing by hosting an anniversary celebration on April 8th! All of the details can be found here, and we look forward to sharing amazing beers and having a great time with you while raising money for two great causes! There will be special beer tappenings around the area, including unique casks of Fayston Maple Imperial Stout with tart cherry at The Mad Taco Waitsfield and Sugarbush Castlerock Pub (expected tappings 4/8 11am).

The week of April 10th is frothy at the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington DC. Special events featuring Lawson’s Finest include the 4/10 Brewers Association Hill climb where guild reps from all 50 states visit elected officials to discuss policy; 4/12 at Jackpot with a Vermont Tap Takeover; and 4/13 at Churchkey with other notable VT & WY breweries.

The week of April 17th debuts Super Session #8 (draft only) in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. This is a special batch of Super Session using copious amounts of Mosaic hops. Cans are expected this summer! Between now and the summer, Super Session #2 (which features Amarillo hops) will be brewed and packaged in cans and draft.

Beginning April 27th, we will release bottles and draft of Kiwi IPA. Brewed with a massive charge of New Zealand grown Nelson Sauvin & Pacific Jade hops, Kiwi Double IPA brings you the terroir of our hop loving friends in the southern hemisphere. Bottles can be found at The Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, Beverage Warehouse, and Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury.

During this month, you’ll find Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 cans and draft around the states of Vermont and Connecticut, and Sip of Sunshine IPA cans and draft in Massachusetts.

New crop of hops are in! You may have noticed a slight difference recently in the flavor profile of our flagship beer Sip of Sunshine IPA. In early February, we began using our 2016 crop of hops in this beer.  Every year both the quality and character of hops and malts that go into our beers vary, as they are seasonal crops. This variation is one of the biggest challenges in the brew house to create a beer that is consistent batch to batch and year to year. In addition, each year’s crop includes numerous lots of the same variety of hops, each originating from a different farmer or different location. Even individual lots can vary widely in characteristics. We love the fact that we create a living product! However, it makes it hard to present exactly the same beer with every batch. In our sensory analysis, the hop lots that we are currently brewing with present a more earthy and dank character than the last several year’s crops. As a result, the tropical fruitiness in the aroma and flavor are a bit more subdued. With our first brew in April, we are bringing in a new lot of hops and Sean is working to optimize just the right blend of different lots to create the most tropical fruit-forward and lupulin-laden experience that we can deliver!

We were humbled to have landed Super Session #2 in the Championship round of the Brewing News National Session IPA competition, and Hopcelot IPA in the Final Four of the National IPA competition! Thank you for all of the support for superb beer!

The Vermont Brewers Association celebrates Green Mountain Beer Week from May 15-21. The evening of May 17th will feature a Lawson’s Finest beer dinner at Whetstone Station in Brattleboro Vermont. On May 19th join Lawson’s Finest at Kingdom Brewing for an evening of Sap beer. Advanced tickets are required for both events and are on sale now!
