April Beer News

We are thrilled to inform you that the Waitsfield Development Review Board has granted our local permits for the new brewery and taproom on Carroll Road. The picture associated with this post is our vision for the new Lawson’s Finest Taproom! Lawson’s Finest honors nine years of brewing by hosting an anniversary celebration on April 8th! All of the details can be found here, and we look forward to sharing amazing beers and having a great time with you while raising money for two great causes! There will be special beer tappenings around the area, including unique casks of Fayston Maple Imperial Stout with tart cherry at The Mad Taco Waitsfield and Sugarbush Castlerock Pub (expected tappings 4/8 11am). The week of April 10th is frothy at the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington DC. Special events featuring Lawson’s Finest include the 4/10 Brewers Association Hill climb where guild reps from all 50 states visit elected officials to discuss policy; 4/12 at Jackpot with a Vermont Tap Takeover; and 4/13 at Churchkey with other notable VT & WY breweries. The week of April 17th debuts Super Session #8 (draft only) in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. This is a special batch of Super Session using copious amounts of Mosaic hops. Cans are expected this summer! Between now and the summer, Super Session #2 (which features Amarillo hops) will be brewed and packaged in cans and draft. Beginning April 27th, we will release bottles and draft of Kiwi IPA. Brewed with a massive charge of New Zealand grown Nelson Sauvin & Pacific Jade hops, Kiwi Double IPA brings you the terroir of our hop loving friends in the southern hemisphere. Bottles can be found at The Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, Beverage Warehouse, and Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury. During this month, you’ll find Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 cans and draft around the states of Vermont and Connecticut, and Sip of Sunshine IPA cans and draft in Massachusetts. New crop of hops are in! You may have noticed a slight difference recently in the flavor profile of our flagship beer Sip of Sunshine IPA. In early February, we began using our 2016 crop of hops in this beer.  Every year both the quality and character of hops and malts that go into our beers vary, as they are seasonal crops. This variation is one of the biggest challenges in the brew house to create a beer that is consistent batch to batch and year to year. In addition, each year’s crop includes numerous lots of the same variety of hops, each originating from a different farmer or different location. Even individual lots can vary widely in characteristics. We love the fact that we create a living product! However, it makes it hard to present exactly the same beer with every batch. In our sensory analysis, the hop lots that we are currently brewing with present a more earthy and dank character than the last several year’s crops. As a result, the tropical fruitiness in the aroma and flavor are a bit more subdued. With our first brew in April, we are bringing in a new lot of hops and Sean is working to optimize just the right blend of different lots to create the most tropical fruit-forward and lupulin-laden experience that we can deliver! We were humbled to have landed Super Session #2 in the Championship round of the Brewing News National Session IPA competition, and Hopcelot IPA in the Final Four of the National IPA competition! Thank you for all of the support for superb beer! The Vermont Brewers Association celebrates Green Mountain Beer Week from...

Farmer’s Market Aug. 23 Cancelled

Farmer’s Market Aug. 23 Cancelled

Friends, we are very sorry to inform you that due to a death in the family, we will not be attending the Waitsfield Farmers Market on Saturday August 23rd in Waitsfield. The good news is that we have made special arrangements so that most of the beer destined to the Farmer’s Market will be delivered that same day, Sat. Aug. 23 to the Village Grocery in Waitsfield and the Warren Store! Furthermore, the proceeds from the day’s beer sales will still benefit the Mad River Valley Community Fund. This effort is headed up by Troy Kingsbury at the Village Grocery, where there will still be special events as well as beer tastings and free coffee from Capitol Grounds in the morning. Here’s the full run-down on the week for beer deliveries! A fresh batch of Sip of Sunshine IPA (#4) will arrive this week and will be going out to all of our retail and draft accounts over the course of the week. Please visit the Facebook pages of Warren Store, Hunger Mtn. Coop, and Beverage Warehouse to find out exactly when the bottles will be available. We will not be able to provide these details to you directly. Saturday 8/23 will be a special delivery of all the beer that was bottled for the Farmers Market to Village Grocery and Warren Store. This will include: Super Session IPA #3 (Sorachi Ace), Knockout Blonde Ale, and a fresh round of Sip of Sunshine IPA. Each store will receive many cases and determine the bottle limits. Double Sunshine fans – our fresh batch is not bottled and won’t be a part of this week’s deliveries, sorry. Double Sunshine will be bottled next week for deliveries on Aug. 28 and 29. If you have additional questions, please be patient and hold off on contacting us, as we won’t have the answers for you. There are so many reasons to visit the Mad River Valley this weekend including the Vermont Music Festival, which kicks off on Friday August 22 with camping and events at Kenyon’s field, and a full day of events and free music at the festival on Saturday (there is a parking fee). Please visit the link for more information: www.vtmusicfest.com Thanks for all your understanding and continued support! – Sean and...

Get your Sunshine on August 23rd!

Posted by on Aug 5, 2014 in farmers markets, mad river valley, our beer, our events | Comments Off on Get your Sunshine on August 23rd!

Waitsfield Farmers Market: August 23rd (special event!) Waitsfield is home to one of the best farmers markets around. It’s a great way to spend a day checking out all the amazing local foods and products our community has to offer. The market runs on Saturdays from 9am-1pm and the remaining dates in 2014 that Lawson’s Finest will be there are Aug. 23, Sept. 20, and Oct. 11. On August 23rd, we will be participating in a fundraiser for the Mad River Valley Community Fund (MRVCF) to commemorate the fund’s 25th Anniversary of helping those in need in the Valley. We will be using our usual ticketed system for the Farmer’s Market, however, we are asking for donations at the time of handing out tickets. For the first 240 people that make a donation of $10 or more to the MRVCF, they will receive the following: free coffee and doughnuts while you wait for the ticket hand-out, a Lawson’s Finest 16oz pint glass, LFL Double Sunshine sticker, and more! A few important details! The ticket hand-out location on August 23rd will be at the Village Grocery (VG) at 4348 Main St, Waitsfield, VT 05673 (not the Mad Taco). The VG will be holding a special event all morning long with coffee samples from Capitol Grounds (starting at the crack of dawn!), a beer tasting, and much more. The VG will also be donating 5% of all the day’s proceeds to the MRVCF along with a number of other local businesses! We plan to hand out tickets at several times to serve the early-risers along with the usual time. Our plan is to hand out tickets at the Village Grocery at 6:30am, 7:30am, and 8:15am. The tickets provide you a place in line to purchase beer at the Farmers Market along with a schedule of approximate times. Please consider a donation of $10 or more to the MRVCF and be rewarded with a bunch of goodies! The beer list for the August 23rd market is as follows: Super Session #3 (Sorachi Ace) (4.2%) – $7/22oz limit of 2/pp Double Sunshine IPA (8%) – $9/22oz limit of 4/pp Maple Tripple Ale (12%) – $25/500ml limit of 4/pp Knockout Blonde Ale (5%) – $7/22oz limit of 2/pp We may have one more beer in store for this market…if it is bottled in time, it will be posted prior to the market. How does it work? Pick up your beer ticket/order form at one of the hand-out times. It will have a number on it that corresponds to a time range to visit us at the market to purchase your beer. We will have enough Double Sunshine IPA for all of the numbered tickets. Other beers may sell-out before your number is called. We have a lighted LED sign at our booth that shows the designated number we are currently serving. PLEASE be considerate of the other vendors and patrons at the market. If you have a long wait ahead, we request that do not stand around our booth or occupy the picnic tables for extended periods of times. Please do not block access to the other vendors booths, the number system provides a general time for you to return. Lawson’s brews news!

Lawson’s brews news!

Hi All! Here is important skinny on LFL brews for the next two weeks: This week’s beer is our very special once-a-year maple sap beer –2013 Maple Tripple Ale! It takes over a year to produce, is aged in maple liquor barrels, is hand corked and caged, and clocks in at 12% ABV….a labor of love! It is available in very limited quantities at stores and this is the only beer going out for delivery this week, so take note. Suggested retail pricing is $25-$27/500ml bottle, and customers will be limited to one bottle per person.Next weekend 7/18-19 is Vermont Brewers Festival! If you have tickets and want to know more about what is pouring at the fest, visit their website. If you don’t have tickets….sorry, try again next year! In stores on 7/17-18 you will find our Super Session #2 (4.2%) – a single hop session IPA brewed with Amarillo on this batch, and our collaboration with the Vermont Pub and Brewery, Spruce Tip IPA (6.8%)! The Spruce Tip IPA will tentatively also be available in bottles at the VBP.Next up….drum roll please…… Our Sip of Sunshine IPA label has been approved by the TTB! Yeehaw! And SOS 3.0 (that’s batch #3…that I brewed at Two Roadson July 1) will tentatively hit Vermont in 22oz bottles for the Vermont Brewers Festival weekend! Wicked psyched! Each batch will have slight variations in the recipe that you may or may not notice, as I work on getting it exactly the way that I intend. If all goes as planned (and that’s a *big* IF until it is on the truck for delivery to the stores), we hope to debut this beer in 22oz bottles on Saturday July 19th on VT Brewers Fest weekend. It will also continue to be available on draught at our regular accounts in Vermont. We are only producing one batch per month at this time, so for the near term, it will only be available in our current VT accounts. We will post more about our plans for this beer in the next few...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! (NOTE – Post revised on 1/19) Yes, I’m a little slow out the gate to get the first post of 2014 up to our blog, nevertheless, I have lots of good tidings and a look a head to what’s new and exciting on the horizon! Scroll to bottom for the list of beers for the next few weeks and our next Farmer’s Market beer list on Feb. 8th First, what a way to start the new year: Thank you Food Republic.com! They named the Double Dose IPA the #1 beer of 2013. With that great news, I can also tell you that Otter Creek Brewing and Lawson’s Finest are planning to team up again to brew the Double Dose IPA in the fall of 2014. Most excellent! What else is ahead for 2014? Here are just a few highlights: Collaborations – yes, please! These projects are one way that our tiny brewery can get some more beer out to the market, by partnering with other breweries that have bigger systems. We are currently planning on several collaborations with our brewing friends here in New England and across the border in Quebec! As soon as details are confirmed, I will post them to our blog. New Beers – Absolutely! This week I brewed the first – Ava IPA – named for the three hops featured in the brew (Apollo, Vanguard, and Amarillo) as well as our oldest daughter Ava. Expect to see a continuous rotation of new IPA’s and single-hop recipes. I am hoping to score some Mosaic hops and this year’s hop contract includes several varieties that are new to our brewery – Galaxy, Comet, Soriachi Ace, Palisade, Glacier and several New Zealand varieties. I’ll be cooking up a big barleywine (Seared Palate perhaps?!) before the cold season is over. I am also working on several new barrel-aged creations, including a rum-barrel stout in partnership with our new hometown Warren distillery – Mad River Distillers. Finally, you asked for….and now it’s coming (summer release) Triple Sunshine IPA! Returning Favorites – With a tiny brewery and just a few fermenters, it’s difficult to make all the varieties of beer that I’d like to, and not even close to all the ones I’ve dreamed up so far! But, we are bringing back some of the fan and brewer favorites for 2014 like Permagrin Rye Pale Ale, Spring Fever Session Ale, Sugarhouse IPA, and Crooked Cabin Brown Ale. Look for the return of our now once-annual Peril Imperial IPA to be released on 4/19. And of course, we’ll have Double Sunshine IPA in our rotation throughout the year…yeah! Events – Our next event is Friday, Feb. 14th, Valentines Day, featuring a Beer Love’s Dinner and Full Moon Snowshoe at Mad River Glen, a fundraiser with all proceeds to benefit the MRG Naturalist Program. Tickets are $30 and include a buffet dinner by Chef Michael Witzel with his famous Beef Stew (featured in Vermont Life magazine!) made with locally sourced ingredients, including LFL Fayston Maple Imperial Stout, along with bread, salad, dessert and a cash bar with three varieties of Lawson’s Finest brews. Enjoy a full moon snowshoe ramble (on your own), and after dinner, Naturalist and Brewer Sean Lawson will present a slide show – “The Nature of Vermont” with images and stories of the wildlife and flora of the Green Mountains in four seasons.Save the date: Lawson’s Finest 6th Anniversary celebration will be held on April 19th, 2014 at the Valley Players Theater in Waitsfield. We’ll have a farmer’s market style bottle sale in the afternoon (with a much more efficient and organized ticketed number system – so please don’t give up if you have...

Vermont Brew Fest Week!

Posted by on Jul 17, 2013 in beer fests, our events | Comments Off on Vermont Brew Fest Week!

Wow, have we got some exciting things in store for you!!! Vermont Spruce Tip IPA collaboration! First and foremost, I’d like to announce our collaboration with the Vermont Pub and Brewery – Vermont Spruce Tip IPA! This beer was brewed in memory of Greg Noonan, who created the first VT spruce tip ale back in 1990 at VPB, of which I was an early fan and inspired me to make at least one spruce beer a year. Our friends at VPB, Steve Polewacyk, Russ Fitzpatrick, and Tommy Noonan joined in the fun to pick new spring growth spruce tips, brew the beer, and just on Monday we bottled it with a special label! You can get your hands on some starting this Friday 7/19 at 11:30am the Vermont Pub and Brewery where we will be doing the official bottle release (note: 4 bottle limit). Vermont Brewers Festival! Next up, this Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 is the 21st edition of the Vermont Brewers Festival and Lawson’s Finest is breaking out all the wares! We’ve got a seven different beers lined up for festival attendees and you can see the list and read descriptions at www.vtbrewfest.com. If you didn’t plan well in advance for tickets, well, sadly then you are out of luck. This year’s festival sold out in record time! (3 days, crazy!). Double Sunshine IPA this week! Yes, indeed, I’ve been brewing madly and timed a double onslaught of Double Sunshine IPA for you! (Pray for actual sunshine too…). That means this week’s deliveries of bottles and draft beer will include more than usual, so hopefully we can make more people happy! Look for bottles to arrive on Thursday at the Warren Store, Friday at the Beverage Warehouse and Hunger Mountain Coop. Draft locations are listed on our website, however the timing of their tapping of the Sunshine is determined at each establishment. Many cheers! –...

Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 19th

Posted by on Jan 18, 2013 in farmers markets, mad river valley, our events | Comments Off on Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 19th

After the huge turnout for our December market, we have some changes planned to hopefully make your experience better and the overall flow work more smoothly. We plan to have a sign outside the venue that states “beer line only” along with our Lawson’s logo. We will start handing out numbered order slips at 8:30 am outside the gym. These slips will have an approximate schedule of time (eg #1-12 = 10:00am to 10:15am etc.) along with a list of the beers that we have available and prices so that your order organized when arriving at the table. We will have a bright red “NOW SERVING” number sign at/behind the table with the number that we are serving that will be visible from a distance, so that folks can simply get a number to secure a place in line and either come back to market later or browse and shop from other vendors before their number is called. If someone misses their number, we will honor their number by joining the end of line at the table. However, due to the space constraints of the indoor market, we cannot not allow more than a few people to gather at our vending table at any time. Please be mindful of not blocking other vendors tables while you wait. While at the Farmer’s Market, please support the other vendors as well as businesses in Montpelier. This Saturday is Meat Day and there are eight different farms offering an amazing range of Vermont-raised meats! You will also find fresh, winter, and canned vegetables, wine and mead, great cheeses, prepared foods, breads and baked goods, maple syrup, honey, crafts and more! There will be a 4 bottle limit per variety of beer (limit of 2 for Kiwi DIPA), per person, with a total limit of one case per person. A list of beers with descriptions can be found below. Red Spruce Bitter – $7/22oz Paradise Pale Ale – $7/22oz Chinooker’d IPA – $8/22oz Kiwi Double IPA – (limit 2 – only 10 cases) – $9/22oz  Maple Nipple Ale – $9/22oz 2011 Lost Meadow Cider (limit 2) – $10/22oz Cask tapping at Three Penny Taproom! We will be finishing the afternoon with a special tapping of a pin (cask) of Double dry-hopped Chinooker’d IPA at the Three Penny Taproom at 3pm! Can’t...

Wow…Thank you! and Sorry!

Posted by on Dec 16, 2012 in farmers markets | 2 comments

We are humbled and amazed at yesterday’s turnout at the Montpelier Farmer’s Market – Thank you! We also want to say “sorry” to anyone who was not able to purchase the bottles you were seeking, and for having to change the bottle limit during the market. We anticipated a busy day with it being the holiday market just before Christmas, however, we also brought double the number of cases that we have ever been able to get to a market in the past. That is part of the reason we raised the limit to six bottles. At many previous markets we brought half as many cases and at four bottle limit, we were ending the day with some cases left – everyone had a chance to buy bottles and after the first hour of the market, when the big rush typically occurs, there was often little to no line or wait. Hence my request to not arrive early….as it is cold outside and the indoor farmers market cannot accommodate a long line inside. Our sincere apologies to anyone who left disappointed. We began offering our beer at the farmer’s market at a way for us to have some retail sales (since we are unable to have tours, tastings or sales at our brewery due to our location), but more importantly to offer sample tastings and meet and greet our customers. With such a huge line, yesterday was the first time we were unable to accommodate sample tastings. For now we will be returning to the four bottle limit and working with the market manager to modify our system of crowd management to ensure that the system is both fair and that we do our best to keep people from waiting in the cold for a long period of time. The Lawson’s thank you for you support! – Sean and...

A Look Ahead….

Posted by on Nov 29, 2012 in farmers markets, our beer | 2 comments

This Week in Beer The seasons are a changin’ and so is our beer line-up! This week brings you my annual rendition of Vermont Local Hop Harvest Ale! It is an American Pale Ale that comes in at 5.0% ABV and was brewed with a variety of local hops, including a few pounds grown right outside the brewery! The beer was dry-hopped with some of the first-ever pelletized local Cascade hops from Bill Powell’s hop farm up in Calais, VT, thanks to the efforts of UVM and the VT Dept. of Agriculture folks who have developed a small scale hop pelletizer at their Alburg hop farm. I hope you enjoy it! In the fermenters….Next week will bring you the debut of our newest Double IPA – Kiwi! It is massively charged with Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Jade hops from New Zealand, clocks in at 8.1% and has a wonderfully rich and dank aroma! The week of 12/10 will bring you our newest incarnation of Paradise Pale Ale! Very hop forward, yet nicely balanced, session-able 4.9% abv. Look for it to be on tap regularly this winter at Mad River Glen ski area’s Stark Pub. Fayston Maple Imperial Stout and our once annual Red Spruce Bitter (4.5% english-style ESB with spruce tips and cinnamon) are on the way for the holiday season….  Montpelier Farmer’s Market Saturday, December 15th, 10am – 2pm Visit www.montpelierfarmersmarket.com for directions and info about all the amazing vendors! (note: winter location is at Vermont College Gym at junction of East State St. and College St.) PLEASE – don’t everyone plan to arrive at 9:45 am…we have PLENTY of beer and you do not need to be there at the very start of the market to have access to our entire selection….AND please support the other vendors at the market especially if you have traveled to shop….there is a fantastic array of vegetables, meats, crafts, prepared foods, maple syrup and more! With holiday shopping in mind, I am bringing to you an epic selection of Lawson’s Finest beverages that you will never find in the store all at once…and some not at all! The list please….. Bottle limit = 6 per variety Bourbon Barrel Aged (Utopias/Knob Creek) Maple Imperial Stout (11%) – $15/375ml Maple Barrel Aged (Sapling Liquor) Maple Imperial Stout (11%) – $15/375ml 2011 Vintage Lost Meadow Hard Cider (7.5%) – $10/22oz Kiwi Double IPA (8.1%) – $9/22oz Maple Nipple Ale (8.0%) – $9/22oz Jade IPA (7.2%) – $8/22oz VT Hop Harvest Ale (5.0%) – $7/22oz Paradise Pale Ale (4.9%) – $7/22oz The barrel aged stouts are this year’s versions. The bourbon barrel was bottled in October and the maple barrel will be a December bottling. The hard cider is also barrel fermented and aged in french oak wine cask. It is a blend of 2010 and 2011 hard ciders. And in the new year…. Look for the return of Double Sunshine IPA and Chinooker’d IPA in January….Also in the works…Nelson Sauvin Pale Ale and…..Toast – a black IPA with toasted barley and rye flakes. I also have several exciting collaborations with other breweries on the horizon! More details as they are...

Waitsfield Farmers Market FINALE! Oct. 6th

Posted by on Oct 1, 2012 in farmers markets, mad river valley, our events | Comments Off on Waitsfield Farmers Market FINALE! Oct. 6th

Well folks, SIPtemberfest was a blast and a resounding success! Thanks to all of you who came out to Mad River Glen for our inaugural “Meet the Brewer” dinner on Friday night with Otter Creek/Wolaver’s brewmaster Mike Gerheart and Lawson’s Finest brewer Sean Lawson. The food and beer pairings were nothing short of amazing! Saturdays sold-out festival event was splendid as well. To top it off, we tapped a cask of Triple Play IPA at the Hostel Tevere after-party on Saturday. Here’s a photo of our SIP brewers, partners, and master event organizer Megan Schultz having a blast at the hostel. Thanks again to all. Looking ahead to this weekend, we have our final Farmer’s Market outdoors for the season in Waitsfield. We have another wonderful array of bottled offerings, more than you will ever find on the store shelf at one time! You can look forward to the return of our infamous Maple Nipple Ale! That’s right, brewed with over a gallon and half of local Vermont Maple Syrup per barrel (31 gallons) this rich american ale (8% abv) has just the right amount of sweetness and maple flavor to savor. Just a note on pricing – you’ll find the price on Maple Nipple to be higher than it used to be (last time it was brewed was over a year ago!) Due to the high cost of maple syrup, this drives the pricing up on both the stout and Maple Nipple. To add to the excitement, we are holding the initial release of this year’s bottling of the Bourbon Barrel Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout! Brewed in the spring of 2011 (on my former 1bbl system), this beauty was laid up in a single oak barrel for over a year that previously held Utopias and Knob Creek! We are moving to a new format for our barrel-aged stouts to make them easier on the wallet and easier to open with just a friend or two…or even just you! Hope to see you this Saturday, from 9am to 1pm. For directions visit www.waitsfieldfarmersmarket.com. Bourbon Barrel Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout (11% abv) – $15/375mlFayston Maple Imperial Stout (10% abv) – $15/750mlTriple Play IPA (7% abv) – $9/22ozMaple Nipple Ale (8% abv) – $9/22oz As usual, we will have a 4 bottle limit/per variety/per person, however, we will likely offer a higher limit on the smaller bottles of barrel-aged stout. And finally, I hope to have one surprise addition to the line up. Please do not email to ask what it is going to be. If its there…its there! (and I will add a post on Friday to that...

I am also pleased to release the second half of the 2010 Farmhouse Rye! Our wholesale distributor, The Beer Guy, LLC is helping to distribute an amazing beer brewed by Mark Mageria of The Bobcat Cafe and Brewery. Even better, all the proceeds for this beer are being donated to flood relief for Vermont’s farmers, through the VT Community Foundation’s Farm Disaster Relief Fund. Thanksgiving

Posted by on Nov 24, 2011 in farmers markets | 1 comment

I am thankful for so much….family most importantly, and that’s what I love most about this holiday. Our T-day tradition is to cook a local Misty Knoll turkey (brined of course) and invite our loved ones. It always seems to snow right around Thanksgiving here in Warren and this year is no exception. A good foot on the ground this evening of the freshies! Wish I was out making some ski turns with friends, but alas, family and food prep call….which I love. This year’s turkey brine follows a recipe from renowned beer cuisine expert and chef Sean Paxton, aka “Homebrew Chef”. See here: http://www.homebrewchef.com/BeerBrinedTurkey.html for his brining recommendation. Mine has a light and hoppy Lawson’s Finest Gonzie session ale (the last of it!) in the mix. Can’t wait! Friday deliveries will happen as usual this week, and going out is the first of the really cold season beers – Fayston Maple Imperial Stout! Perfect for these cold nights and pairing with a dessert, dark chocolate, or just savoring by the woodstove. Several cases of bottles ($15/750ml) will go to Hunger Mtn. Coop and Beverage Warehouse, and the Warren Store will have plenty through next week. It will also go on tap soon (delivered Friday) at all of our draft accounts, listed on Lawson’s website. Next week, the Sugarhouse IPA will be back, followed by Double Sunshine the following week. You can look forward to our holiday brew Red Spruce Bitter sometime around X-mas/New Years. Look for us at our first winter farmer’s market at the Dec. 17th Montpelier Farmers Market. Lawson’s will also be at the 1/21, 3/3, and 4/21 markets offering tastings and bottle sales. Visit the market’s website for more info, times, directions and descriptions of all the really great farms and producers that are at the market. Have a wonderful holiday, and THANK YOU for being a fan and supporter of Lawson’s Finest...

Brewing Updates and March 5th Market

Posted by on Feb 28, 2011 in farmers markets, our beer, our events | 3 comments

Sometimes it take a while to get up-to-date on the blog, so here we go! Permagrin Rye P.A. is back! The 2010 incarnation of our Permagrin Rye Pale Ale (6%) features a new recipe that I hope you find even more delicious. The base malt is now a heartier Munich, while Crystal Rye and Toasted Rye Flakes have been added to give a richer rye character and mouthfeel. You’ll find the color is slightly darker and overall the beer a bit more balanced, yet still featuring a healthy dose of flavorful hops including Simcoe, Centennial, and Amarillo. Third Anniversary Brew! I dug deep into the archives and have re-brewed the very first receipe used in our current brewhaus! This beer was first tapped around St. Patty’s day at Mad River Glen in 2008, and hasn’t been brewed again since. Our Sugarhouse IPA is a classy lupulin-forward mouthfull of Summit and Columbus hops backed by a medium-bodied Vermont-style pale ale rounded by three varieties of Cara malts and our favorite Gambrinus pale malted barley. It will be available for a limited time during this March on draft and in bottles. Montpelier Farmer’s Market – March 5, 2010 – 10 am This Saturday, I’ll be a the market again with the remaning 7 cases of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout – 84 bottles while they last. In order spread out the availability and crowd, we will be holding two cases of each beer until 12pm noon to make available at that time. Here’s this market’s offering: BBA FMIS – 750ml – $30 (no limit) Double Sunshine IPA – 22oz- $9 (limit 2/person) Knockout Blonde Ale – 22oz – $7 (limit 2/person) 2009 Hillside Hard Cider – 750ml – $12 (no limit) Lawson’s 2009 vintage hard cider is fermented exclusively with champagne yeast and 100% apple juice pressed at Lost Meadow Cidery in Calais, VT. It has been carefully cellar-aged for a year and a half! If the Sugarhouse IPA is adequately conditioned later this week, I will also be offering that in 22oz bottles as well....

Montpelier Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 22th

Posted by on Jan 20, 2011 in farmers markets, our events | Comments Off on Montpelier Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 22th

This Saturday will feature the second release in our Barrel-Aged series, an exciting long-term project this I described in detail in my last post (see below). I will be at the Montpelier Farmers Market on E. State St. from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, January 22nd, offering bottles for sale, and sample tastings. We will be offering our Bourbon Barrel-Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout in bottles for the very first time! The barrels I obtained were freshly emptied from the Maker’s Mark distillery. They are a small family run artisan distiller, much like some of our home-grown breweries here in Vermont. If you think the long name is a mouth-full, wait until you taste it! Much like last month’s Maple Barrel Aged release, this beer is bottle conditioned, carbonated and ready to drink now, however, I highly recommend saving some for a year or more to age, which will smooth out the beer, while melding the different flavors together, increase the complexity, and mellow the 11% abv. on this special beer. I am also pleased to let you know that I was able bottle 350 bottles of the 750ml size – twice as much as our Maple Barrel version, so there should be plenty to go around on Saturday. We will also be planning to pour a number of samples of the barrel aged stout to have available on the table at 10am, so that you can try this beer before or while you purchase it. Just to be sure, and to help spread out the crowd, we’ll be running this release a bit differently. Last market the crowd that formed at the table was an issue for other vendors, as folks were sometimes blocked from getting to the adjacent tables. I will be releasing cases of this beer at 10am, 11am and Noon, so you don’t have to be here at 10am to purchase this beer. I will also be holding several cases of our other varieties of beer to begin selling at Noon, thus offering later arrivals the opportunity to purchase beer. Last market, we were sold out of all of our beer by around noon, I know crazy. Until we do expand someday, I really appreciate your understanding that quantities are limited, and that the demand is greater than the supply. Here are the exact details and beer menu: Maker’s Mark Bourbon Barrel-Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout – $30/750ml – no limit $8/187ml (very limited) – 1 bottle/person if purchasing 750ml, 2 bottles if not. The following bottles have a limit of 2/person of each variety (limit 6 total) Double Sunshine IPA – $9/22ozKnockout Blonde – $7/22ozMaple Nipple Ale – $7/22oz Hope to see some of you there on Saturday. Cheers and safe...

Holiday Market – Beers Galore!

A quick note to let all our friends know about the excitement that this Saturday, December 18th holds for beer lovers in, around, or visiting Vermont! Lawson’s Finest will be making our winter farmer’s market debut for this season in Montplier, VT at the Vermont College Gym (corner of College St. and State St.) with an array of brews, including the special release of our first-ever maple barrel aged, Fayston Maple Imperial Stout! This beer was brewed last spring and rested for nearly 9 months, using an American Oak barrel from Saxton’s River Distillery (VT), maker of Sapling Maple Liquor. Oh my! While this beer may certainly be enjoyed now and over the holidays, I highly recommend restraint, as like a wine, it will continue to mature for years to come. Try waiting a year or more….if you can. We’ll offer samples for tasting ($1 each) and 120 bottles (of 180 total) of the BA FMIS for sale with a 2 bottle/person limit at $30/750ml. I also have some extra special stocking stuffers! This beer in a single serving 187ml nipper for $8! (48 bottles only at the market, 2/pp limit). You don’t need company to open that one 🙂 —- Keep in mind, this beer represents a huge investment of time, resources, and two entire batches (yes, that’s two whole brew days!) to fill one oak barrel. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I do. Whew… More details will follow, but here is the list of beers: (22oz bottles at $7 ea, unless noted). Sample pours -2oz – Two for $1. Red Spruce Bitter (4% abv) – 2010 Holiday Ale with Spruce tips and cinnamonParadise Ale (6% abv) – Lawson’s hoppy amber ale for the winter seasonDouble Sunshine IPA (8% abv) – $9/22oz – Our new mouthful of juicy hop sensationsHopzilla Double IPA (9% abv) – $12/750ml – Pucker up! And maybe…just maybe a few surprises, like our 2009 Hillside Cider, a Vermont-pressed and blended stock of apples designed by Terry Bradshaw of Lost Meadow Cidery in Calais, VT for world-class hard cider making! Cheers!Sean PS – 10am to 2pm at the VT College Gym, 12/18/10. Stop by the Three Penny Taproom...

Boston, here we go! Lawson’s is pleased to participate in this year’s BeerAdvocate Night of the Funk, part of the 2-day Belgian Beer Festival in Boston, MA at the Cyclorama (Boston Center for the Arts). I’ll be there on Friday, November 5th starting at 6pm serving up three unusual varieties of Lawson’s Finest Liquids for your funktastic sipping. I haven’t offered sour or wild ales as a regular part of our line-up, however, I’ve been having fun with one-batch special releases for festival events over the last several years. I work primarily with isolated strains of Brettanomyces wild yeast, and I’ll offer three different varieties at NOTF. All are fairly young, in terms of aging, as Brett. brews continue to mature for many months. Maple on Brett – A robust Vermont Maple ale, fermented with 100% Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. Mild barnyard character. 8% abv Mad Wild Grapes – Our wild blonde ale, rested on crushed wild grapes harvested along the riparian areas of the Mad River Valley. Light, slightly tart, and purple! 6% abv Funky Sunshine – An American IPA, fermented entirely with Brett. Fruity, herbal, and funky. 7% abv Locally, the Warren Store will be well-stocked on Friday morning with Maple Nipple Ale, Knockout Blonde Ale, 292 Hoptoberfest Ale, and Big Hapi IBA. Vermont Brewers Festival

Oh yes! High season for beer is here. I like to break out all the special stuff for the festivals, especially this one. We sadly and fondly miss Greg Noonan, brewing pioneer of Vermont. This year’s festival is dedicated to him. If you want tickets, get them now. Saturday PM session is almost sold out. http://www.vtbrewfest.com/ 2010 Vermont Brewers Festival — Lawson’s Finest Liquids Local Potion – Our 2010 VBF Collaboration brew with Destiny Saxon of Zero Gravity brewery at American Flatbread Burlington is a Vermont Maple Ale. Our localvore-style ale is brewed with a ‘New Englander’ malted barley grown by Maine’s Potato Growers, with 100% Vermont-grown Cascade hops, a healthy addition of pure Vermont Maple Syrup from Purinton Farm in Huntington, and ZG house ale yeast. A small portion of the grist was house-smoked with Dave Rooke over apple wood, creating a subtle hint of smoky aroma and flavor. ~5.3% abv Noonan’s Tribute – A cask of Local Potion, dry-tipped and naturally carbonated in the firkin with one of Greg’s favorite Vermont ingredients, spring tips of the Red Spruce (Picea rubens) tree! – Tapped at SESSION 2 until it’s gone. ~5.3% abv Weiss-K Wheat Bier – A German style hefeweizen that is best when served up fresh and ‘mit hefe’ (with yeast). A delightfully refreshing ale with a delicate fruity aroma and a mild spicy flavor from our special Bavarian wheat yeast. ~5.4% abv Chinooker’d IPA – Our award-winning American-style India Pale Ale recipe is chockfull of Chinook hops and bursting with pine and citrus aromas and flavors. Bad blogger!

Posted by on Jun 27, 2010 in beer fests, collaborations, our beer | Comments Off on Bad blogger!

OK, you already know the bad news: I’m a bad blogger these days. A blog is only relevant if you update it regulary! Not to mention the ‘bound-fo-fail’ curse of a New Year’s Resolution (to blog more often….) Photo credit: (c) Megan Shultz The good news is I’ve been a busy brewer, which means more people enjoying more Lawson’s Finest ales than ever before! Plus a few very special projects are now in the works that have been taking up a great deal of my time. So here’s a glimpse of few exiting things at Lawson’s Finest. I do indeed hope to get more complete details here in the near future. ON DECK: Summer! Festival Season is here. We poured the Brattleboro Brewers Festival and upcoming are The Vermont Brewer’s Festival (wait till you see the line of LFL brews!) on July 16-17, The VT Cheesemakers Festival at Shelburne Farms (with bottle sales) on July 25, and Ommegang’s “Belgium Comes to Cooperstown” festival on July 30-31. Our barrel-aging project is underway. Holy oaked goodness brewman! More details to follow. Our newest collaboration with Destiny at Zero Gravity Brewing of Flatbread Btown fame is “Local Potion,” a localvore style Vermont maple ale, brewed with barley grown in Maine, 100% VT hops, syrup from Huntington, and a bit of wisdom from Paul Sayler. On top of that, we house-smoked some of the malted barely with Root Beer man and BBQ master Dave Rooke to lend a hint of smokiness to this beer. I’ll have a cask “dry-tipped” with spruce sprigs at the VBFest (session 2) called Noonan’s Tribute. Also, look for it on tap and cask at Flatbread Burlington Hearth starting the week of the festival. A few other new beers are on the way for summer including an easy drinking Session in the Rye saison (4.5%) , a juicy hop forward pale ale called Liquid Sunshine, and the return of Karen’s Kolsh redux for summer. So many good beers to brew and to try. Cheers to you all and thanks for coming back to check us out!...

The Nanobrewery Movement

Posted by on Mar 31, 2010 in special events | 4 comments

So, to preface this post let’s get to the announcement first: TONIGHT! 7pm – E. Warren School House Market/Rootswork – I’m giving a talk entitled “On Brewing Excellence: Beer Hobbyist to Entrepreneur” and we’ll be sampling up some Liquids. The store will also be open and stock up (briefly!) on two varieties of Lawson’s for sale in bottles. I’ve read a lot lately on the web and blogs about “Nanobreweries”. Heck, I didn’t even know *we* are a nanobrewery or that the term existed until about six months after we opened and people started calling us just that. At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was an insult or a compliment. Now I know that there is real movement out there, all across the US, of very small community-based breweries that make beer in tiny batches for their very local customers. What is ‘Nano’?Most people think the range is generally 10 gallons to 3 barrels – a barrel is an old English measure of beer and is 31 gallons, but its the industry standard for volume. There are at least 35 nanobreweries in existence that have been listed on various websites, but I’d be willing to bet that there are more we don’t even know about. Here are a few lists on blogs and some nifty writing about them: Hess Brewing Odessy TopFermented Trillium Brewing What have other folks been saying? Well try any one of the gazillion blogs out there for some reading. Erik over at his blog TopFermented.com wrote an intriguing piece on the movement and is interested in opening his own (nano?) brewery some day. To sum it up, he is fascinated by the idea, but daunted by the seemingly crazy idea of a potentially not-so-sound business model (a tiny brewery). He thinks that to succeed we must either be 1) independently wealthy or supported by a well-off partner; 2)”batshit crazy insane”; and/or 3) headed for a bankrupt future…us nano-brewers, that is. He raises some really good issues, and I can see that he really wants the idea to work. I agree with him on the ‘crazy’ part 🙂 – you’ve got to be a bit mad to quit a good full-time job to start your own business….*any* business. Nano-brewing can be a risky venture, and every “industry expert” will tell you NOT to start a production brewery that is smaller than 15 bbl (a brewery that packages and sells beer – no on-site brewpub). In the face of these challenges and odds, though there are now dozens of these tiny breweries making a go for it. Time will tell how successful we are, just like any business venture, lots will start and many will likely fail too. Fortunately the risks are much smaller with a nano-brewery than a full-scale production brewery, and your not going to rack up six or seven figures of debt in the process. So, Erik’s post got me thinking in the right direction for the talk I have tonight. My response/comment to his post (below) sums up what I plan to talk about tonight (along with some background on my own history, the basics of the brewing process, and of course some banter about each of the styles of beer that I present.) So….please….read on! And thanks for visiting. __________________________________________________________________ Hey Erik, I’m fascinated with your fascination and enjoyed reading your post. We started our ‘nano’ in Vermont over two years ago, and it was big success right from the get-go. I think you’ve got it now, and had most of it in the first place. The people behind nano...

St. Paddy’s Day, Wednesday March 17! This week we will celebrate our second anniversary in fine fashion at the place where we sold our very first keg of beer, in the Stark’s Pub at Mad River Glen ski area in Waitsfield, VT. Several special kegs of beer will be tapped at 6pm and live music with Sugar Shack will start at 7pm. The pub will be serving food so that you can have dinner or light fare while you enjoy your brews and boogie! Many thanks go out to our supporters and everyone that has made it possible for us to be in the business of creating beer one barrel at a time (most especially my lovely wife Karen!) Here’s the line-up for the evening: Wannagrin Rye IPA, 6.5% abv – a special collaboration brew with Our Lager Boys of the Wanna Brew Club here in the Mad River Valley. Fayston Maple Imperial Stout, 10.1% abv – Hefty, complex and full of roasted and burnt character, all balanced by a subtle maple and malt sweetness.
