May Beer News

First, a thank you. Our 9th anniversary benefit event on 4/8/17 was such a great celebration, and full of gratitude as well. Karen and Sean Lawson were pleased to donate $8,000 to Lily Stilwell to help retrofit her home for accessibility, and $3,000 to the Mad River Path Association to enhance pedestrian connectivity through Irasville and to extend the boardwalk located off Carroll Road towards the Mad River Green. Lawson’s Finest appreciates all of your continued support over the years, and looks ahead to our bright future! BEER DELIVERIES The week of May 1st we are thrilled to distribute a very special Western beer to Vermont! Lawson’s Finest has a refrigerated shipment coming from Yakima WA with a fresh load of hops, and we decided to make a detour and pick up cases of Melvin…a tasty IPA from our friends at Melvin Brewing in Jackson Hole Wyoming. They are two time Alpha King Champions and also have World Beer Cup & GABF bling to prove it, so grab some while you can as it won’t last long. You will find limited quantities on 5/2 at Village Grocery, Mehuron’s, Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury, 5/4 Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, 5/5 Beverage Warehouse and 5/8 Woodstock Hops and Barley. Check out our Find Our Beer page for location information.  Starting May 5th, we bring back an all-time fan favorite beer – Double Sunshine IPA (bottles and draft). It’ll be available in bottles 5/5 at Beverage Warehouse, 5/9 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury, and 5/11 at Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op. The week of May 22nd will feature a new collaboration beer with our friends at Whetstone Station in Brattleboro VT. Rico Poivre Rye & Peppercorn Saison (bottles and draft) will debut at the special beer dinner hosted by Whetstone Station on May 17th. It’ll be available in bottles 5/25 at Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, 5/26 at Beverage Warehouse, and 5/30 at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury. This month Sean will be brewing a batch of Maple Tripple, our award winning beer brewed only once per year in the spring with 100% concentrated maple sap. Sean will then blend this batch with last years batch (which aged for a full year) before bottling which lends a rich, complex and distinctly Vermont character to the beer. Possible bottle release this summer – follow the monthly beer news for updates! During this month, you’ll find Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 (cans and draft) around the states of Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Sip of Sunshine IPA – The first packaging run in May features the same quality hops we always use to brew our Sip of Sunshine IPA, however, this batch incorporates a new lot from a different hop farmer. Different lots can have distinct differences in flavor and aroma profile. We are working with our entire hops supply from the 2016 fall harvest to perfect just the right blend of different lots of hops to deliver the most tropical fruit-forward and lupulin-laden experience you expect in every can of Sip! SPECIAL EVENTS May 10 & 11 Lawson’s Finest will make appearances in Massachusetts as a way to thank you for your support! On  5/10 from 9-11pm we’ll be at City Tap House in Boston for a “Fireside Chat with Sean Lawson”. On Thursday 5/11 you can “Meet the Brewer” at Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge from 4:30-6:30. From 8-10pm you can “Meet the Brewer” at The Publick House in Brookline. May 13th Lawson’s Finest is happy to quench your thirst at the Rising Pint beer festival in East Hartford Connecticut! May 15-21 is Green Mountain Beer Week and Lawson’s Finest is proud to take part! May 17th is a night all about...

April Beer News

We are thrilled to inform you that the Waitsfield Development Review Board has granted our local permits for the new brewery and taproom on Carroll Road. The picture associated with this post is our vision for the new Lawson’s Finest Taproom! Lawson’s Finest honors nine years of brewing by hosting an anniversary celebration on April 8th! All of the details can be found here, and we look forward to sharing amazing beers and having a great time with you while raising money for two great causes! There will be special beer tappenings around the area, including unique casks of Fayston Maple Imperial Stout with tart cherry at The Mad Taco Waitsfield and Sugarbush Castlerock Pub (expected tappings 4/8 11am). The week of April 10th is frothy at the Craft Brewers Conference in Washington DC. Special events featuring Lawson’s Finest include the 4/10 Brewers Association Hill climb where guild reps from all 50 states visit elected officials to discuss policy; 4/12 at Jackpot with a Vermont Tap Takeover; and 4/13 at Churchkey with other notable VT & WY breweries. The week of April 17th debuts Super Session #8 (draft only) in Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. This is a special batch of Super Session using copious amounts of Mosaic hops. Cans are expected this summer! Between now and the summer, Super Session #2 (which features Amarillo hops) will be brewed and packaged in cans and draft. Beginning April 27th, we will release bottles and draft of Kiwi IPA. Brewed with a massive charge of New Zealand grown Nelson Sauvin & Pacific Jade hops, Kiwi Double IPA brings you the terroir of our hop loving friends in the southern hemisphere. Bottles can be found at The Warren Store, Hunger Mountain Co-op, Beverage Warehouse, and Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury. During this month, you’ll find Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session #2 cans and draft around the states of Vermont and Connecticut, and Sip of Sunshine IPA cans and draft in Massachusetts. New crop of hops are in! You may have noticed a slight difference recently in the flavor profile of our flagship beer Sip of Sunshine IPA. In early February, we began using our 2016 crop of hops in this beer.  Every year both the quality and character of hops and malts that go into our beers vary, as they are seasonal crops. This variation is one of the biggest challenges in the brew house to create a beer that is consistent batch to batch and year to year. In addition, each year’s crop includes numerous lots of the same variety of hops, each originating from a different farmer or different location. Even individual lots can vary widely in characteristics. We love the fact that we create a living product! However, it makes it hard to present exactly the same beer with every batch. In our sensory analysis, the hop lots that we are currently brewing with present a more earthy and dank character than the last several year’s crops. As a result, the tropical fruitiness in the aroma and flavor are a bit more subdued. With our first brew in April, we are bringing in a new lot of hops and Sean is working to optimize just the right blend of different lots to create the most tropical fruit-forward and lupulin-laden experience that we can deliver! We were humbled to have landed Super Session #2 in the Championship round of the Brewing News National Session IPA competition, and Hopcelot IPA in the Final Four of the National IPA competition! Thank you for all of the support for superb beer! The Vermont Brewers Association celebrates Green Mountain Beer Week from...

Lawson’s Finest – a new home for the future

Here’s news that will thrill beer lovers near and far! Sean and Karen Lawson, proprietors of the award-winning microbrewery Lawson’s Finest Liquids, are in the process of purchasing the warehouse buildings and property located at 155 Carroll Road in Waitsfield, VT with a goal of closing in the summer of 2017. Sean says, “It is our hope that this will become the expanded home of Lawson’s Finest in the Mad River Valley.” The craft beer company plans to open a new larger brewery, a tasting room and offer retail sales. Currently, Lawson’s Finest is based in Warren VT with a 7 barrel brewery (1 U.S. barrel (bbl) = 31 gallons). In the new space in Waitsfield, they anticipate having a 30 bbl brewery. They plan to move their craft beer-making operation from a tiny 280 square-foot building at their home in Warren to the 7,500-square-foot warehouse in Waitsfield, which means more beer as well as adding employees and new equipment. They plan to keep the 7bbl brewery in Warren operational as a pilot location, with the opportunity for more creativity and experimentation. The Lawson’s also plan to continue brewing their Sip of Sunshine IPA and Super Session beers at Two Roads Brewing in CT now and in the future. Sean elaborates, “We’ve hoped from the beginning that our Sip of Sunshine IPA brewed at Two Roads could get to the big Northeast beer markets that are nearby, but people in Vermont and Connecticut are drinking it faster than we can make it!” Create a destination for Lawson’s Finest consumers “One of the things that’s been missing from our business is that due to our residential location, people can’t get to or see the brewery, and taste the beer or meet the brewer; people really want that,” Sean said. The tasting room plans to include a family-friendly space where people can sample a variety of locally produced artisan foods and beverages. The Lawson’s desire to align their project with both the scale and the character of Waitsfield and the surrounding areas of the Mad River Valley. “While this is an exciting first step,” Lawson said,“our plans are contingent upon the completion of the Winter Park Community waste water system, as well as obtaining all of the necessary permits from the Town of Waitsfield and State of Vermont.” If the permitting phase is successful and they complete the purchase, the Lawson’s anticipate renovations and equipment installation will take an additional 6-12 months, with a potential opening in 2018. “We’ve given ourselves two years to get to an opening date. We want to be completely transparent with our community as we go through this process,” Sean said. Since its inception, his beers have captured the fancy of beer lovers near and far, creating a cult-like following. Lawson’s Finest has also captured awards in recent years at the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, and the National IPA Championship, creating heightened interest in their brand. Several factors over the past few years have made them more willing to take the next step in terms of growing the business. They partner with Mad River Food Hub in Waitsfield for local Vermont distribution. “Having warehouse space with both dry and refrigerated storage, trucking capacity, and the distribution facility at the Food Hub have been critical” Sean said. Lawson’s Finest also brews beer under contract at Two Roads Brewery in Stratford, Connecticut, where they produce Sip of Sunshine and Super Session #2. This experience has given them the confidence that they can take on a larger operation and have the ability to move forward with this...

Waitsfield Farmers Market: August 23rd (special event!) Waitsfield is home to one of the best farmers markets around. It’s a great way to spend a day checking out all the amazing local foods and products our community has to offer. The market runs on Saturdays from 9am-1pm and the remaining dates in 2014 that Lawson’s Finest will be there are Aug. 23, Sept. 20, and Oct. 11. On August 23rd, we will be participating in a fundraiser for the Mad River Valley Community Fund (MRVCF) to commemorate the fund’s 25th Anniversary of helping those in need in the Valley. We will be using our usual ticketed system for the Farmer’s Market, however, we are asking for donations at the time of handing out tickets. For the first 240 people that make a donation of $10 or more to the MRVCF, they will receive the following: free coffee and doughnuts while you wait for the ticket hand-out, a Lawson’s Finest 16oz pint glass, LFL Double Sunshine sticker, and more! A few important details! The ticket hand-out location on August 23rd will be at the Village Grocery (VG) at 4348 Main St, Waitsfield, VT 05673 (not the Mad Taco). The VG will also be donating 5% of all the day’s proceeds to the MRVCF along with a number of other local businesses! We plan to hand out tickets at several times to serve the early-risers along with the usual time. Our plan is to hand out tickets at the Village Grocery at 6:30am, 7:30am, and 8:15am. The tickets provide you a place in line to purchase beer at the Farmers Market along with a schedule of approximate times. Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 19th

Posted by on Jan 18, 2013 in farmers markets, mad river valley, our events | Comments Off on Farmer’s Market – Sat. Jan. 19th

After the huge turnout for our December market, we have some changes planned to hopefully make your experience better and the overall flow work more smoothly. We plan to have a sign outside the venue that states “beer line only” along with our Lawson’s logo. We will start handing out numbered order slips at 8:30 am outside the gym. These slips will have an approximate schedule of time (eg #1-12 = 10:00am to 10:15am etc.) along with a list of the beers that we have available and prices so that your order organized when arriving at the table. We will have a bright red “NOW SERVING” number sign at/behind the table with the number that we are serving that will be visible from a distance, so that folks can simply get a number to secure a place in line and either come back to market later or browse and shop from other vendors before their number is called. If someone misses their number, we will honor their number by joining the end of line at the table. However, due to the space constraints of the indoor market, we cannot not allow more than a few people to gather at our vending table at any time. Please be mindful of not blocking other vendors tables while you wait. While at the Farmer’s Market, please support the other vendors as well as businesses in Montpelier. This Saturday is Meat Day and there are eight different farms offering an amazing range of Vermont-raised meats! You will also find fresh, winter, and canned vegetables, wine and mead, great cheeses, prepared foods, breads and baked goods, maple syrup, honey, crafts and more! There will be a 4 bottle limit per variety of beer (limit of 2 for Kiwi DIPA), per person, with a total limit of one case per person. A list of beers with descriptions can be found below. Red Spruce Bitter – $7/22oz Paradise Pale Ale – $7/22oz Chinooker’d IPA – $8/22oz Kiwi Double IPA – (limit 2 – only 10 cases) – $9/22oz  Maple Nipple Ale – $9/22oz 2011 Lost Meadow Cider (limit 2) – $10/22oz Cask tapping at Three Penny Taproom! We will be finishing the afternoon with a special tapping of a pin (cask) of Double dry-hopped Chinooker’d IPA at the Three Penny Taproom at 3pm! Can’t...

Waitsfield Farmers Market FINALE! Oct. 6th

Posted by on Oct 1, 2012 in farmers markets, mad river valley, our events | Comments Off on Waitsfield Farmers Market FINALE! Oct. 6th

Well folks, SIPtemberfest was a blast and a resounding success! Thanks to all of you who came out to Mad River Glen for our inaugural “Meet the Brewer” dinner on Friday night with Otter Creek/Wolaver’s brewmaster Mike Gerheart and Lawson’s Finest brewer Sean Lawson. The food and beer pairings were nothing short of amazing! Saturdays sold-out festival event was splendid as well. To top it off, we tapped a cask of Triple Play IPA at the Hostel Tevere after-party on Saturday. Here’s a photo of our SIP brewers, partners, and master event organizer Megan Schultz having a blast at the hostel. Thanks again to all. Looking ahead to this weekend, we have our final Farmer’s Market outdoors for the season in Waitsfield. We have another wonderful array of bottled offerings, more than you will ever find on the store shelf at one time! You can look forward to the return of our infamous Maple Nipple Ale! That’s right, brewed with over a gallon and half of local Vermont Maple Syrup per barrel (31 gallons) this rich american ale (8% abv) has just the right amount of sweetness and maple flavor to savor. Just a note on pricing – you’ll find the price on Maple Nipple to be higher than it used to be (last time it was brewed was over a year ago!) Due to the high cost of maple syrup, this drives the pricing up on both the stout and Maple Nipple. To add to the excitement, we are holding the initial release of this year’s bottling of the Bourbon Barrel Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout! Brewed in the spring of 2011 (on my former 1bbl system), this beauty was laid up in a single oak barrel for over a year that previously held Utopias and Knob Creek! We are moving to a new format for our barrel-aged stouts to make them easier on the wallet and easier to open with just a friend or two…or even just you! Hope to see you this Saturday, from 9am to 1pm. For directions visit www.waitsfieldfarmersmarket.com. Bourbon Barrel Aged Fayston Maple Imperial Stout (11% abv) – $15/375mlFayston Maple Imperial Stout (10% abv) – $15/750mlTriple Play IPA (7% abv) – $9/22ozMaple Nipple Ale (8% abv) – $9/22oz As usual, we will have a 4 bottle limit/per variety/per person, however, we will likely offer a higher limit on the smaller bottles of barrel-aged stout. And finally, I hope to have one surprise addition to the line up. Please do not email to ask what it is going to be. If its there…its there! (and I will add a post on Friday to that...

I am also pleased to release the second half of the 2010 Farmhouse Rye! Thanks to everyone that attended the VT brew fest, it was a blast as always, the weather was perfect, and the variety of great brews was outstanding! Just returned from Belgium Comes to Cooperstown event at Brewery Ommegang. Its one of the best festivals around! Our wholesale distributor, The Beer Guy, LLC is helping to distribute an amazing beer brewed by Mark Mageria of The Bobcat Cafe and Brewery. It is called ‘Flood Suds’ and is a Belgian-inspired Wit Bier brewed with 100% Vermont-grown ingredients. Awesome stuff! Even better, all the proceeds for this beer are being donated to flood relief for Vermont’s farmers, through the VT Community Foundation’s Farm Disaster Relief Fund. Our hearts, thoughts, and donations go out to all those who have been displaced, endured hardship, and lost their homes to Hurricane Irene. Just a quick update to let you know that Lawson’s and our brewery are fine. Our current offering is a session ale, called Gonzie. IPA light or American Bitter Ale? It’s up to you. I made alot of this beer for the last warm weeks of the summer and the start of fall, so you will see it right thru September. Hope you enjoy and take good care. To update you on the places where you can find our beer: American Flatbread – heavy flood damage, but an amazing recovery is underway; they will re-open with Gonzie on tap on Friday 9/2! Warren Store – Floodwaters came very close, but the store is open as usual. Gonzie in bottles on Fridays. Pitcher Inn – The Tracks Pub downstairs was underwater on Sunday eve. They hope to re-open in a few weeks. Will keep you posted. Common Man – Gonzie on tap and they are high and dry! Open Tues-Sat each week. Village Porch in Rochester, VT – This town has been cut-off from access by vehicle for three days, and just re-established today. The community was devastated by the flood, and the main roads, as well as bridges in/out of town destroyed in places. My understanding is that the Village Porch and the Mendells are unharmed. They do not have power. To get updated information, visit www.wcax.com for news, and https://www.facebook.com/MRVpostIrene for information about the Mad River Valley, (and Granville/Hancock/Rochester) and recovery efforts. You can donate goods in person on Friday in Waitsfield (see link above), make a donation to the Mad River Valley Community Fund, The Red Cross, or a reputable charitable organization. Finally, please support our fellow brewer and friends John and Jen Kimmich of The Alchemist. Their brewpub was submerged by the floodwaters in Waterbury, and they lost much of the contents. The bright news is that they plan to gut the building and begin anew. And now the really great news…..Heady Topper in cans! Yes, Vermont’s first canned beer – brewed and canned in Vermont! The Alchemist Cannery has been in the works for months and will be opening just in time for Labor Day weekend!! You can get cold, tall, 16oz cans of Heady Topper – an American Double IPA at the Cannery, see the operation and get a tasting too, all starting this Friday, September 2 at 11am! Our newest IPA, a few select bottles of Hopzilla Double IPA, and a yet to be annouced, fresh out of the cooler, just bottled brand new never relased before special one time only BEER! Ok, I’m getting carried away. Why not? George Carlin is my inspiration here (see some of his recorded material if you are perplexed). See you...
